Arthur E. Silva, age 92 of Littleton, passed away on Monday, July 9, 2018 at Emerson Hospital in Concord. He was the husband of the late Miriam G. (Cann) Silva and the late Ruth (Berta) Silva.
Born in Beverly on August 10, 1925, he was the son of the late Joseph P. and Winnifred (Frost) Silva. Raised and educated in Beverly. At the age of 17, Arthur dropped out of school and joined the United States Marine Corps and proudly served his country in the South Pacific during WWII. Upon his return home he went back to school to earn his high school diploma and married Miriam on February 12, 1950 at the First Baptist Church in Beverly. They moved to Ashfield, MA, where he had his first teaching position. In 1954 they moved to Littleton, where he finished out his teaching and coaching career.
Arthur graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from Suffolk University and also earned his Master's Degree in Physical Education from Springfield College. He taught as a Physical Education teacher for the Littleton School System for many years. He also coached basketball (boys and girls), baseball, track, and field hockey. He also served as the Athletic Director for many years. Arthur enjoyed hunting, fishing, and wood working. He was a member of the Littleton Sportsman Club and participated in field archery and pistol shooting. He was also the director of the Massachusetts Jr. Conservation Camp for several years.
He is survived by his daughter, Anne Lee Ellis, and her husband Charlie of Littleton, his grandchildren Matthew G. Ellis and his wife Sarah of Littleton and Bethany A. DeLollis of Littleton and his great granddaughters Alana and Ella DeLollis. He is also survived by a dear family friend, Estelle Higley, from Houston, TX, who lived with Arthur and his family when Estelle was a teen. He is also survived by his four step-children, David, Diana, Dolores, and Doddie and their families all from Illinois. He is predeceased by his sisters Eleanor Miller and June Driscoll.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Arthur on Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 10:00 am-1:00 pm at the First Baptist Church of Littleton, 461 King St., Littleton. His memorial service will follow at 1:00. Burial with U.S. Marine Military Honors in Westlawn Cemetery, Littleton.
