Barbara M. Comeau

Barbara M. (Clare) Comeau, 88, a resident of Littleton, MA, died Friday, June 6, surrounded by family and friends at her home.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine and her husband Jay of Liverpool, a daughter, Cynthia A. Bostick of Groton, MA; a son and daughter-in-law, John C. and Ann Comeau of Dracut, MA; eight grandchildren: Sean Conor Lyttle; Kara and Chris Comeau; Rebecca and Abby Bostick; Ken, Seph, and Karey Gatu; four great-grandchildren; her treasured cousin Joanne Casella; and several beloved nieces and nephews.
She was the mother of late Jeffrey P. Comeau. She was predeceased by her sister Nancy J. (Clare) Swanson and her brother, Jack N. Clare.
Barbara was born in Peabody, Oct. 12, 1925, to Nicholas F. Clare and Catherine A. (Macdonald) Clare. She graduated from Peabody High School at the age of 16 in 1942. She went on from there to enjoy a long career in the medical profession, working as a Medical Laboratory Assistant at Ayer Community Hospital, the Offices of Dr. Hopkins and Dr. Mclean in Ayer, and Nashoba Community Hospital in Ayer. In 1977 she graduated from the Boston School of Cytology at Northeastern University. Thereafter she worked as a cytotechnologist at Burbank Hospital in Fitchburg, MA and finished her career at Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA. She was a member of the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, The American Society for Cytotechnology, and the Massachusetts Cytology Society.
Barbara was an early opponent of the Vietnam War in the 1960's. In the 1970's she was a co-founder of the Littleton Youth Center. In retirement Barbara worked part time and volunteered at the Reuben Hoar Library in Littleton, MA, and did income tax preparation work under George Dewey, a Littleton CPA. She was also a member of the Littleton Town Democratic Committee. She was a strong advocate for women's rights throughout her life.
Barbara was an avid reader and often read 3 or 4 mystery novels a week. She took delight in gardening. She enjoyed traveling and went on trips to Hawaii, Greece, and Ireland multiple times. She also went on multiple trips to Cancun, Mexico, with her dear sister Nancy. She was a Littleton resident for 53 years.

Friends may call at Badger Funeral Home, 347 King St.., Littleton, MA on Friday from 4 until 8pm. Her funeral mass will be celebrated at 9am on Saturday at St. Anne Parish, 75 King St. Littleton, MA. Burial in Westlawn Cemetery, Littleton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Barbara's memory may be made to the Reuben Hoar Library in Littleton or the American Red Cross.
