David I. Walsh, age 77, a longtime resident of Pepperell and former Water Commissioner died December 10, 2010 at Greenbriar Terrace Healthcare in Nashua, NH after a period of declining health. He was the husband of the late Nancy (Chase) Walsh who died in 2000. He was born in Lexington, MA on December 21, 1932, the son of the late Patrick and Annie V. (Coyne) Walsh. He was educated in the Groton School System.
He served in the U.S. Army receiving the rank of Private. He moved to Pepperell in 1956 and started the family business of Walsh Trucking in 1959, retiring in 2000. David was active in Town Government serving as a Water Commissioner for many years, Tree Warden, Sealer of Weights and Measures, Nissitissit School Building Committee, Lieutenant of the volunteer Fire Department with 20 years of service, former member of the Prescott Grange #73 in Pepperell. He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Pepperell, Past Grand Knight of Pepperell Council #317 and Fourth Degree member of Bishop Beaven Assembly #396 in Leominster. Mr. Walsh loved the competition of Draft Horse Pulling Teams at local County Fairs.
He leaves two sons, David I. Walsh, Jr. and his wife, Cathleen A. and William J. Walsh, Sr. and his wife Susan G., all of Pepperell; three sisters, Margaret Fleming of Nashua, NH, Frances Bartlett of Milford, NH and Eileen Paulson of Florida; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He is pre-deceased by a brother, James Walsh and a sister Mary Keefe.
Visiting hours at the Marchand Funeral Home, 16 Pleasant Street, Pepperell on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace worshipping at St. Joseph's Parish, 28 Tarbell Street, Pepperell. Burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, Pepperell. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal Street, Watertown, MA 02472.
