With hearts full of love, we remember the life of Edward F. Scioli. Known fondly as Ed, Eddie, Ski, Pops, Papa, Dad, he was adored for his sharp wit and love of family.
Ed was born on May 5, 1937, in Somerville, MA, to the late Francis and Elsie Scioli of Italian and Portuguese descent. Ed graduated from Somerville High and was a member of the Magoon Square Eagles, an acapella singing quartet. Ed met the “love of his life”, Ann Marie Catherine Murphy, after “saving her” from a register fire at First National Supermarket, where they both worked as teenagers. Ed and Ann got married at the young ages of 21 and 24 and enjoyed blazing around the city in his beloved frost-blue ‘59 Chevy Impala Convertible.
Ed earned a degree from Wentworth Institute of Technology while Ann completed nursing school. Ed began his career as a jet mechanic for Northwest Orient Airlines at Idlewild airport in NY (now JFK), then Northeast Airlines at Boston Logan, both while proudly serving his country in the United States Marine Corps reserves. He then transitioned to oceanography at Draper Labs in Cambridge, MA, which often took him to Bermuda to measure ocean currents. In time, Ann and Ed started their family in Arlington, MA. When their brood grew to 5, they moved to “the country” where they built their home in Littleton, MA, welcoming 1 more “cherub” soon thereafter. After many years of long commutes and long hours, Ed hung up his instruments to start his own company, Silver Birch Builders. With his artistic and architectural skills and reputation for precision, Ed successfully led Silver Birch until his retirement.
Ed enjoyed many pastimes -he loved his Red Sox, was known in town as the Little League coach for many years, and was a supportive businessman to town sports thereafter. He also loved fly-fishing, boating, woodworking, sketching, story-telling, great music, and was a talented cook, known equally for his weekly pizza parties as his gourmet dinners. He was obsessed with puppies and always had one of his grand-dogs on his lap. Most summers, he could be found trekking through Maine with Ann. With fishing rod and camera in hand, they logged many miles across the rivers, lakes, and the ocean shore - she, eager to capture the perfect shot of wildlife, he, always striving to catch “The Big One”.
Ed lived his life with integrity and honesty. He believed that you either do something right or you don’t do it at all, and never stop pushing yourself to try new things. He was also quick to speak his mind and correct your grammar! A lifelong learner, he was often found engrossed in the History and Military channels, with his head buried in his latest book or finishing his daily crossword puzzle. Ed shared his knowledge with anyone who wanted to learn. Whether to read blueprints, dissect a math problem, tie a fishing fly, or flavor your favorite dish, he wanted everyone to keep learning. Ed had a way of instantly reading a person- nothing got past him (just ask his children!). He was also there to listen to his friends and seemed to attract those who often just “needed to talk”. Not only did he have an incredible way of engaging others, but he also had a great sense of humor. Ann would always say he was “full of the devil!”
His siblings, Frank and Elsie, were his family, but they were also his best friends. He and Ann would spend hours with them and their spouses, laughing and reliving their history at their many parties. They each shared that mischievous charm. Ed saw his nephews and sons-in-law as his own, always getting a “kick out of” their latest adventures. Seeing his great-nieces lit up his day. And he was always on a “need to know everything” basis with his kids. With all his heart, he truly cherished his grandchildren, beaming with pride with each one of their accomplishments. He was a staple in their lives- always there for many for their “firsts”, for a story, for a high-five, for a hug. But more than anything else, his wife Ann was the air that he breathed; they were inseparable, and they will remain the gold standard of what true love really is.
Ed is survived by his loving wife Ann of 64 years, his children Edward M. Scioli, Peter F. Scioli, Mark C. Scioli, Lynn A. (Scioli) Cumming and husband Steven, Susan M. (Scioli) Bresnick and husband Jim, Jill E. (Scioli) Swygart and husband BJ, his sister-in-law Penni Scioli, and brother-in-law Jerry Murphy. Ed was a loving grandfather to Bryan, Justin, Lauren, Benjamin, Christopher, Nicholas, Ava, and Colette. He was also a proud uncle to his nephew Andrew Bauld and his wife Alexandra and their daughter Louisa, nephew Frank Scioli and his wife Kristin and their daughter Lily, nephew Dan Scioli and his wife Sarah and their daughter Eliza, nephew David Scioli and his daughter Olivia, his partner Jayme and her daughter Annabel, and Olivia’s mother Jen Scioli. He also adored Lauren’s mother, Pamela Ripley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Elsie Scioli, his brother Frank Scioli, his sister Elsie Bauld and her husband Bill Bauld, and brother-in-law Michael Murphy.
Ed’s love, wisdom, and laughter will forever be embedded in the hearts of all who knew him. Please join us for a Celebration of Life on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 11:00 AM-2:00 PM at the Orchard Church, 130 Littleton Rd, Westford, MA, with Military Honors at 11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Ed’s honor to the following charities to help local children and animals, which were both very important to him. He strongly believed that you put others first and protect those around you, especially those who can’t protect themselves.
