Raised and educated in Medford and Somerville, Ed attended Medford High School and graduated in 1947. After high school, Ed enlisted in the United States Navy and served from 1948-1952. He met his love at a church function and married on June 27, 1954 at the First Universalist Church in Medford, Mass. Ed and Mildred began a family and moved from Medford to Littleton, Mass in 1967. While raising a family and working, Ed completed his degree in Electronic Engineering from Northeastern University in 1968. Ed had a successful Engineering career working for Raytheon Corporation.

He spent countless hours calling on friends and family, delivering food to food pantry and cooking for others at the church. He loved spending time with his family and friends (often involving coffee) and supporting his grandchildren at any event.

Edwin is survived by his children, John Shaffer and wife Lisa Midttun of Northborough, David Shaffer and wife Robin of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Peter Shaffer and wife Kristen of Portland, OR, and Nancy Monahan and husband Michael of Atkinson, NH.
