Elizabeth Cleveland Lackey

June 18, 1932 — September 8, 2017

Elizabeth (Cleveland) Lackey died on Friday, September 8, 2017 at her home in Groton, Massachusetts. She was 85. Elizabeth, known to all as "Esu," was born on June 18, 1932 in New Rochelle, New York, to J. Luther Cleveland and Elizabeth Ames Cleveland. She grew up in Pelham, New York and attended the Masters School in Tarrytown, New York and was graduated from Connecticut College. She married Frank Danby Lackey III in Westchester County on June 9, 1956. They were married 61 years and are survived by a large and loving family.

Esu earned a master's degree and a doctorate in divinity from the Episcopal Divinity School of Cambridge, Massachusetts. A loving mother and dedicated wife with a profound love of dogs and mystery novels, she was always open to new ideas and devoted much of her life to advancing social justice and raising awareness of the role of class and institutional bias in limiting opportunity for women and the poor. She was ahead of her time in many ways. Her family and friends will miss her intelligence, warm spirit and discerning eye for truth.

Private services will be held at a future date.
