Elizabeth A. “Betty” (Spang) McCarthy of Littleton, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Thursday, May 18, 2023. Betty was born to Philip and Alice (Higgins) Spang on June 12, 1927. She grew up in West Roxbury and attended Holy Name School and Holy Trinity High School, followed by training at Katherine Gibbs School. Upon graduation, she worked for several years at the Jordan Marsh corporate offices in Boston.

In 1951, Betty married Bernard C. “Bud” McCarthy; they lived in Belmont, Massachusetts, until 1963, when they moved to Littleton. Betty stayed home for many years to raise her six children. In the late 1960s, she returned to work at Digital Equipment Corporation and then Data General, ending her career in 1990 at the Corning Glass Electronic Division sales office in Littleton.

Betty enjoyed nothing more than being with her family, both immediate and extended. She volunteered in various positions for years at St. Anne Church and was a member of St. Anne Sodality. She and Bud also loved spending winters in Ft. Myers, Florida.

She is survived by her children, Diane Lynch and her husband Vincent of Somerville, Massachusetts; Robert and his wife Irene of Rindge, New Hampshire; Susan Brigham and her husband Jonathan of Littleton; Peter, and David, both of Littleton as well as her daughter in law Teresa McCarthy of Spring City, Pennsylvania. She is also survived by her brother James Spang of Wareham and her sister Janet Dunne of Walpole. Betty was predeceased by her husband Bud in 2006; her oldest son, Stephen, of Spring City, Pennsylvania, in 2020; and her brother Philip in 1991. She also leaves 14 loving grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Family and friends will gather to remember Betty on Thursday, May 25, from 8:30−9:30 a.m. at Badger Funeral Home, 347 King Street, in Littleton, immediately followed by a funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m. at St. Anne Church, 75 King Street, Littleton, and a graveside service at Westlawn Cemetery.
