Ellen Truitt Hargraves: A Life of Love, Grace, and Enduring Legacy

Ellen Truitt Hargraves' long and courageous journey came to a peaceful close on Sunday, June 15th. After years of neurological decline, her body—worn from countless battles—finally found rest. Yet as her strength faded, her spirit grew ever more luminous. She left this world surrounded by love, having gifted her family and friends with a lifetime of wisdom, warmth, and unforgettable memories.

Ellen’s love touched many lives, especially those of her children: Carolyn Cassidy (husband Tim) of Ocean Ridge, FL; Patti Lannon (partner Kris Duquette) of Peabody, MA; and Robert Hargraves (wife Deanna) of Brunswick, ME. She was a cherished grandmother to nine grandchildren—Timothy Cassidy, Sarah Cassidy Bradshaw (husband Jamie), Laurel Cassidy, Matthew Lannon, Marin Lannon, Jenna Lannon, Gordon Hargraves, Olivia Hargraves, and Georgia Hargraves—each of whom held a special bond with their beloved “Grandma Ellen.”

Born on August 8, 1939, in Warsaw, NY, to Austin and Nellie (Jennings) Truitt, Ellen grew up in Rochester and was affectionately known as “Trudy.” She graduated from Denison University in 1961 and soon after moved to Massachusetts to teach elementary school in Groton. There, she met and married the love of her life, Bob Hargraves. While raising their family, she earned a master’s degree in education from Fitchburg State College in 1979 and continued to balance her roles as a dedicated educator and mother.

Ellen became a cornerstone of the Groton community, where she touched countless lives through her deep involvement and enduring friendships. A longtime member of Union Congregational Church, she sang in the choir for decades, later joined the bell choir, and even led the cherub choir for many years. Her passion for education extended into civic leadership—she served as Chair of the Groton School Committee during the 1970s and 1980s. She was active in the Groton Women’s Club, a Girl Scout leader, tennis player, pie baker, Christmas stocking knitter, swimming instructor, and passionate Red Sox fan. She supported political causes close to her heart, especially championing her husband, and was widely known for sending thoughtful, handwritten notes and cards on every occasion.

Ellen’s later years were marked by daily health challenges, yet also by extraordinary grace and courage. Her husband Bob stood beside her through it all—his steadfast care and deep devotion sustained her through the hardest times. His love extended Ellen’s life and lifted her spirit in ways that words can scarcely express. Their bond remains a quiet, powerful testament to enduring love.

Ellen’s life will be celebrated with calling hours on Friday, July 11, from 3–6 p.m. at Badger Funeral Home in Groton. A service honoring her life will follow on Saturday, July 12, at 11 a.m. at the Union Congregational Church, Groton.

Ellen’s light lives on in the hearts of those she touched.
