Evelyn R. (Regan) Foster Mattila, age 88, formerly of Pepperell, and Rindge, NH, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Legends Rehabilitation in Gardner, MA after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late Silas E. "Al" Foster III who died in 1960 and the late Eugene Mattila who died in 2009.
She was born in Lawrence, MA on August 30, 1924, a daughter of the late James L. and Margaret B. (Clark) Regan. She was a graduate of St. Mary's High School in Lawrence, MA. Following graduation and the death of her father, she went to work as a machinist at General Electric in Lynn, MA during War time. She joined the US Marine Corp. in 1944 serving during WWII and receiving the rank of Corporal. She continued to serve in the US Marine Corp. Women's Reserve following her active duty service. Evelyn was a resident of Pepperell, MA for 18 years where in her earlier years, she worked for East Pepperell Post Office, Bob's Hardware Store, and was head teller for the Union National Bank of Lowell in the Pepperell Branch Office. In 1972 she owned and operated ARACOM, Inc. in Lunenburg, MA for many years with her husband Eugene. She was a coach for Pepperell girls' softball, champion bowler for the Pepperell Women's Bowling League, and was a USCG certified motor boater.
She is survived by a daughter, Lyn Foster and her husband Gerry Brown of Ashburnham, MA, a daughter in-law, Gloria Foster of New Ipswich, NH, a step-daughter, Bonnie ViConte and her husband Karl of Fitchburg, MA, a step-son, Steve Mattila and his wife Rebecca of Ashby, MA, five grandchildren, Cody Brown, Darcy Brown, Frank C. Smith, Emily Smith, and Silas E. Foster V, two nieces, Martha Breen Wallace and Kathi Harris, and a nephew, Michael Clark. She was predeceased by a son, Silas E. Foster IV.
Visiting hours at the MARCHAND FUNERAL HOME, 16 Pleasant St., Pepperell on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, Pepperell.
