Merrill was born in Salem, MA and raised in Danvers, MA. He recently resided in Millsboro DE, Fairfax VA, and Scotch Plains NJ, but previously lived in Groton MA from 1957-1981 and in Largo FL from 1981-2000.
He served with the 32nd Infantry "Red Arrow" Division in WWII in New Guinea & the Philippines. In his late 80s and early 90s, he spoke to his granddaughter's American history classes about his WWII experiences.
He was a lifelong fanatic Red Sox fan and held Danvers High School pitching records for many years. He was very active in the semipro baseball program in Danvers and in the Little League program in Groton.
Merrill worked as an estimator at Murray Printing Company in Forge Village, MA for 30 years. He was a member of the Union Congregational Church in Groton, MA and the Amity-Mosaic Masonic Lodge in Danvers, MA. He was also a member of the Groton Country Club and played golf both there and in Florida until he was 82.
He was the son of the late Austin Roger and Marie Peterson Sidmore.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Sally and Paul Briggs of Millsboro DE, his daughter-in-law Jeannie Sidmore of E. Vassalboro ME, his grandchildren Rebecca and Matthew Hutchinson, Dustie and Brian Lessard, Jennifer and Eric Mills, Jim and Rachel Sidmore, and Ashley Briggs, and his 10 great grandchildren, Austin, Samantha, Damon, David, Emily, Maggie, Cameron, Mason, Charlie and Avery.
Merrill was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Julia "Betty" Sidmore, his son David Sidmore, his brother Stuart Sidmore, his sister Dorothea Eaton, and his granddaughter Debra Sidmore.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 1 PM at the Union Congregational Church, 218 Main Street, Groton MA with a service to follow at 2 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Veterans History Project at loc.gov/vets or sent to the Library of Congress, Development Office, 101 Independence Ave, S.E., Washington, DC 20540. Include the name of the person being honored as well as the donor name and address.
