Henry Harvey

Henry Stimson Harvey, 98, family physician, social activist, carpenter, birder, and reader, died peacefully at his home in Littleton on June 15, 2014. He was one of the founding members of Acton Medical Associates, where he worked for more than thirty years. AMA remains a large, vibrant medical group serving the local area. In his early years he made house calls, delivered babies, and held evening office hours so people did not have to take time off from work.
He spent his non-work hours quietly helping others. His activities in his town included serving as treasurer of the Littleton Council on Aging, founding member and treasurer of the Littleton Conservation Trust, trustee of the First Church Unitarian, and deliverer of Meals on Wheels until he was 96. He also assisted with the town's weekly Neighborhood Supper, the annual church fair, and many other local charitable events.
Over his long life he build a dam for the Quakers in Tennessee, rebuilt a bombed-out church in Mississippi in 1964, and constructed houses for Habitat for Humanity in Mexico and Kentucky, among other work projects. He was a skilled carpenter.
He loved sailing and ice boating, tennis and swimming, skiing and skating, chopping wood and using his snow blower. He traveled extensively?to Europe, Africa, Asia, and Central America.
Dr. Harvey was born in Brookline Massachusetts on October 9, 1915, to Elbert and Lucile (Stimson) Harvey. He was educated at schools in Massachusetts until he moved to New York City to get a divinity degree at Union Theological Seminary. After three years as a minister in rural Colorado, he and his wife Marjorie returned east so he could attend medical school. They settled in Littleton in 1951, where they raised their four children. His wife of 70 years, Marjorie (Dorson) Harvey, died in June 2013. He is survived by his daughters Sheridan Harvey and Robin Berry, sons Richard and Henry Harvey, Jr., 8 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First Church Unitarian, 19 Foster Street, Littleton, on July 24 at 3 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Neighborhood Supper (send checks to the Congregational Church of Littleton, 330 King Street, Littleton, MA 01460 with "kitchen fund" on the memo line, or to the Reuben Hoar Library, 41 Shattuck Street, Littleton, MA.
