Janet Eleanor MacLeod

Groton, Massachusetts

Janet E. (Halligan) MacLeod, formally of Merrimac, MA. born Sep. 14th, 1932, to William and Mary Halligan in Boston, MA, died on October 30th, 2023, at Westford House Nursing Home in Westford, MA.

She was a dedicated mother of seven children who was well known for stretching meals and making clothes for her large family, as highlighted by an interview and a full-page article in the Haverhill Gazette.

Janet graduated from Brighton High School in 1950 and she attended the Mass College of Art for a short time to practice/study painting. Her watercolor art lives on in her memory, as it adorns the walls of her children’s homes. She was also an avid singer with her voice recorded on vinyl from the 1940s singing 'O Holy Night'. She sang with the Merri Players and participated in the Merrimac Santa Parade Musical variety shows for more than 20 years and in the Church of the Nativity choir. Janet also belonged to the Ladies' Sodality at the Church of Nativity.

She worked for many years with contributions at Merrimac Metal, AW Chesterton in Groveland, The Office of Employment Security in Haverhill, and Pentucket Regional High School.

Mrs. MacLeod joins her husband of almost 70 years, Robert D. MacLeod, in heaven along with her sister Mary Quinlan. 

Janet is survived by her seven children; Patricia and Kevin Arakelian, Jefferson, NH; Marie and Gary Alder, N. Fort Myers, FL.; Susan and Gary Ralls, Nashua, NH; Margaret (Peggy) and Patrick Magee, Wilmington, MA.; Linda MacLeod, Parsonsfield, ME; Robert D. Jr. and Diana MacLeod, East Falmouth, MA.; Dr. Michael W. and Laura MacLeod, Hastings, MI and her sister Rita Murphy, Randolph, MA. She leaves 23 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Friends and family are invited to visitation hours from 5:00-7:00 PM on Monday, November 6, 2023, at the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King Street, Littleton, MA. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, at 9:00 AM in St. Anne’s Church, 75 King Street, Littleton, MA. A burial will follow in Locust Grove Cemetery, 2 Locust Grove Rd., Merrimac, MA.
