John F. Nyilis, 62, a long-time Groton resident, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025, following a brief illness. He was the loving husband of Ellen M. (Sullivan) Nyilis and cherished father of John Nyilis of Baltimore, Maryland, and Lauren Nyilis of Groton, Massachusetts.
Born in Mt. Vernon, New York on February 18, 1962, he was the oldest child of John E. and Maureen (Daly) Nyilis of Delmar, New York.
John graduated from Bethlehem Central High School in Delmar and later attended Cornell University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. John also earned a Master’s Degree from Northeastern University in Electrical Engineering and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Boston University.
John and Ellen married on August 29, 1992, and moved to Groton, Massachusetts in 1994. John worked for BAE Systems, Inc. in Nashua, NH for over 30 years as a Director of Programs.
An avid sports fan, John was a tormented follower of the New York Jets, New York Mets, and the New York Knicks. Ultimately, John cherished his time watching the Red Sox with his son John and the Bruins with his daughter Lauren. Through the years, John especially enjoyed watching his kids play their various sports, from the youth level through high school and his son’s rugby games at Loyola University Maryland. John enjoyed his Saturdays, especially his morning breakfast dates and trips to Barnes & Noble with his daughter Lauren.
In addition to his wife, children, and parents, John is also survived by his siblings, Michael of Arlington, VA; Mary (Jay) Hatton of Stafford, VA; Collen (Dave) Brennan of San Diego CA; Tom (Jessica) of Watertown, MA. John enjoyed spending time with his in-laws Michael Sullivan (Nellie), Maureen Reim (John), Carol Donnelly (Danny), and Clare Freed (Rich) as well as his many nieces and nephews from both Nyilis and Sullivan families.
Family and friends will gather to honor and remember John for visiting hours on Thursday, January 16, 2025, from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home, 45 School Street, Groton. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 17 at 10:30 am at Our Lady of Grace worshipping at St. James Church, 13 St. James Ave. West Groton. Burial at Groton Cemetery will be private at a future date.
