In Loving Memory of Karen Spinney Pickard February 20, 1938 – July 16, 2026

Karen Spinney Pickard passed away peacefully on July 16, 2026, leaving behind a legacy defined by warmth, creativity, dedication to family, and a deeply rooted love for life’s simple pleasures and a peaceful existence.

Born in Concord, Massachusetts, on February 20, 1938, to Earl and Evelyn (Hansen) Spinney, Karen was raised in Concord and graduated from Acton High School before earning her Bachelor’s degree in Physical Therapy at the University of Connecticut.

Karen went on to build a fulfilling, decades-long career in healthcare defined by compassion and expertise. She spent roughly 12 years at Emerson Hospital, where she rose to become Head of Physical Therapy and touched countless lives. After relocating to New York, she earned her state PT license and joined a local agency, ultimately stepping into a leadership role as Head of Physical Therapy.

On October 23, 1960, Karen married the love of her life, William "Bill" Pickard. Together, they embraced a fulfilling farming lifestyle in Littleton, Massachusetts, for many years before moving to Charlton, Massachusetts. On their larger, picturesque farm in Charlton, there was always work to be done and love to share. Karen actively cared for the calves and kept everyone fed, especially the many nieces and nephews who spent weekends and school vacations there. The "big house" was constantly filled with laughter, noise, and cherished memories.

Karen had a lifelong passion for horses. She loved horseback riding and took immense joy in teaching her niece, Sharen, how to ride on a Welsh pony named Robyn. A memorable highlight of her equestrian life was breeding her chestnut mare to produce a beautiful Appaloosa foal named Pebbles.

Creative, cultured, and immensely talented, Karen filled her leisure time with a wide array of passions. She possessed a wonderful ear for music, loved playing the piano, and had a rich appreciation for classical compositions. Each summer, she eagerly anticipated the concert season at SPAC in Saratoga with her friends, always making sure to secure the best seats in the house for favorites like Josh Groban and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Karen was a passionate reader who could never pass up a good Mary Higgins Clark mystery, and she kept her mind sharp with Sudoku and word puzzles. She loved attending auctions, collecting unique antique dolls, and hunting for distinctive antique furniture. A gifted artisan, she enjoyed ceramics, sewing, embroidery, and crafting. Most notably, she was a skilled knitter of intricate Scandinavian mittens, keeping alive a traditional craft passed down through generations.

Among her most cherished adventures was her 75th birthday trip to London, an unforgettable journey filled with joy and treasured memories. To mark the milestone, her niece Sharen and nephew-in-law Colin treated her to traditional afternoon tea at the elegant Goring Hotel in Belgravia, followed by an enchanting performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Royal Albert Hall. She was equally fond of her trips to Wales, where she loved reconnecting with extended family and dear friends.

Above all, Karen cherished her bond with her niece, Sharen Roberts, with whom she shared an endearing, lifelong mother-daughter relationship. Karen strived to live a balanced, peaceful, and contented life, drawing daily inspiration from Max Ehrmann’s 1927 poem, Desiderata. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, her brother David, her cherished husband Bill, and her devoted, most recent canine companion, Brandi. Karen is survived by her loving niece Sharen (Colin) Roberts, whom she held in her heart as a daughter; her stepsister Nancy (Armand); her brothers- and sisters-in-law John and Dixie Pickard, and Hobart and Cynthia Pickard; as well as many dear nieces, nephews, and friends.

Karen’s life will be honored with a Funeral Mass on Saturday, August 8, 2026, at 11:00am at the Trinitarian Congregational Church, located at 54 Walden Street, Concord, Massachusetts. Burial proceedings will follow at 12:30pm at Westlawn Cemetery, 7 New Estate Road, Littleton, Massachusetts.
