Kathleen Kitterick Scully, age 69, a longtime resident of Littleton, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, surrounded by her family, after a long journey with cancer, which she embraced with incredible grace.
Kathleen is survived by her three daughters, Shannon (Eric) Michel of Durham, CT; Meghan (Matthew) Schmidt of Westfield, MA; and Caitlin (Douglas) Ciallella of Harrington Park, NJ; her six grandchildren: Connor, Kellan, Sean, Keeley, Mackenzie & Michael; as well as her sisters and brothers, Gail Douglas, Anne Marie (David) Bingel, Tom (Karen) Kitterick and Jamie (Amy) Kitterick, as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Kathleen is predeceased by her husband of nearly 40 years, David Scully, her cherished parents James and Ellen Kitterick, as well as her brother-in-law, Lloyd Douglas, and many beloved members of the Scully family.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 6, 1956, Kathleen was a proud New Englander who lived a life that embodied resilience, hard work, and selflessness. She was a 1973 graduate of the prestigious Boston Latin Academy, and went on to attend UMass Amherst’s School of Nursing, from which she graduated with honors in 1977. Kathy’s fruitful 42-year career as a registered nurse was such a vital part of her identity. She predominantly worked at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, where she held many roles, including cardiac & intensive care RN and Clinical Advisor. Kathy loved sharing stories of her time at the old Deaconess, especially how she trudged through the snow in the blizzard of ‘78, the epitome of accountability and putting others first. Kathy then furthered her education, becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner upon graduating from UMass Lowell in 1997. She practiced as a family medicine NP as well as a Multiple Sclerosis advanced nurse specialist, before finishing her career as a 16+ year professor of nursing at Middlesex Community College; taking pride in teaching the next generation of nurses to be as thoughtful, meticulous and caring as she always was.
Kathy’s family was blessed with her nursing knowledge and compassionate spirit that crossed from profession to home, when she cared for her late parents and husband. Kathleen’s incredible strength, both as a caregiver, and then as a patient herself, was unmatched. She was an inspiration, especially to her daughters, as they each pursued their own calling in healthcare, too. In part, her strength was derived from her deep devotion to the Catholic faith. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Anne Parish in Littleton for over 35 years. Though her faith was certainly challenged with life’s ups and downs, her steadfast belief that God does not give more than we can handle held true until her final days.
Kathy will be remembered always for her kind spirit, believing in the importance of expressing gratitude, and her love of baking, especially her mini cheesecakes, magic squares, fancy brownies and pumpkin breads! Despite the fact that she was forever surprised by traffic, she will be remembered as a road warrior to visit her girls no matter the day or time, and never turned down a 10 mile detour to get the cheapest BJ’s gas. She loved reading a good book, making memories on family trips (including our Ireland “girls trip”) and was a proud Bostonian- cheering on the Red Sox, Celtics, Bruins & Patriots, especially when she joined the Fenway faithful crowd, jumping off the dugout to storm the field in celebration of winning the pennant in 1967!
The spirit of sisterhood is something Kathy held close to her heart, beginning with her treasured relationships with her wonderful sisters, who will miss her dearly. She also cherished her college roommate and work-colleagues turned friends, who remained close over the years. Kathy ingrained in her daughters this sisterhood bond, from the early days of forced hugs on the couch, and insisted they learn the importance of sisters as your best friends, mentors, and cheerleaders.
But, most importantly, she will be forever remembered in her most valued roles as Mom and Nanny. She was a beautiful example that it is possible to be a wonderful Mom and also do what you love. She never missed a single important day or chance to celebrate her “three greatest blessings,” whether it be at a show, field hockey game, academic or professional accomplishment, or to simply answer the phone when all you needed was to hear Mom’s voice. She remembered every date- interviews, birthdays, anniversaries. She was always there, right up front with the most beautiful flowers, and always beaming with pride. Kathy always said how she was so blessed to gain the three “sons she never had,” welcoming & loving them as such, while watching her daughters grow their own families. She was a cherished Nanny, often found in the stands at the hockey rink, at a dance recital, swimming in the pool, reading before bed, and passing on her pumpkin bread recipes. Nanny will be deeply missed by all of her sweet grandchildren, as well as all who knew and loved her.
Kathy’s family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to her warmhearted neighbors in Littleton, who were always there to lend a helping hand, and to our extended families. We will be forever grateful to her compassionate healthcare team at Mass General Hospital, Dr. Gao and Rojer, as well as the many teams at Middlesex Hospital, for their kind & loving care over the past two years. To her countless, amazing nurses, but especially Abby and Jaime, over the past few weeks: you will always hold a special place in our hearts.
