Larry was born and raised in Melrose, MA to Margaret and Lawrence Castagneto. Growing up his favorite pastimes were hunting and fishing with his father. While in high school he started pursing his love of building and racing boats, quickly earning recognition and awards as a champion racer, making it into the Marine Racing Hall of Fame. Larry’s summers were spent with his family in Littleton, fishing on Fort Pond.
Larry joined the Army ROTC at Northeastern University while earning his degree in civil engineering. He deployed to Vietnam in 1964 with the 41st Civil Affairs Company. He worked on constructions projects such as rebuilding hospitals.
Upon returning from Vietnam, Larry started his own boat building business called CastaCraft where he built award winning outboard racing boats.
He then started working at the MBTA as a civil engineer in the construction department where he worked for 23 years before retirement.
Larry met his wife Joan in 1969 and they were married in 1971. They bought a home in Peabody, MA where they raised their two children David and Elizabeth. As a family they would spend their summers in Gilford, NH in the house that Larry built with his father. Larry enjoyed boating and waterskiing on Lake Winnipesaukee in the summer and skiing at Gunstock with the kids in the winter.
After retirement, Larry enjoyed salt water fishing for stripers out of Gloucester. He was very active with the New England Saltwater Fly Rod Association. He also stayed active with the South Shore Outboard Racing Association where he would continue to attend races and reunite with old friends from the racing community.
He and Joan built their retirement home in Littleton in 2006 and have been living there since. Larry enjoyed spending his days fishing on the Swift River for rainbow trout and caring for the property that his been in his family for over 125 years. Larry is a communicant of Blessed Trinity Parish.
The visitation will be held on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at 3:00 pm until 6:00 pm, at the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King Street, Littleton, Massachusetts. The funeral mass will be held on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 10:00 am at the Blessed Trinity Parish - St Anne Church, 75 King Street, Littleton, Massachusetts. Burial will be Private for family.
