Margaret Godwin

Margaret "Peggy " Jane (Copeland) Godwin, 88, of Nashua, NH and formerly of Pepperell, MA died March 2, 2009 in Nashua.

She was born in Philadelphia, PA on June 11, 1920, the daughter of the late Joseph and Grace (Jurgenson) Copeland. She was the wife of the late Charles J. Godwin, Jr. who died in 2005. Peggy and her late husband owned and operated the Godwin Gallery in Pepperell for 27 years. The Godwin's who bought and sold 19th an 20th Century American Art worked with art restorers to bring paintings they found at auction, in attics and other forgotten places back to their original luster. Peggy was the driving force and manager of Winland Nurseries in Pepperell where she propagated plants ranging from the exotic to the ordinary. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1942 with a degree in geology and went to work for the U. S. Geological Survey at the University of Illinois. She began work on her Master's Degree in geology when she met Charles J. Godwin, Jr. They married in 1944.

She leaves two sons, Joseph L. Godwin of Falmouth, MA and John F. Godwin of Shelburne Falls, MA, a daughter, Rachel Shapiro of Denver, CO and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at 10 a.m. the Community Church, 3 Townsend Street, Pepperell, MA.
