Marina Elena (Ninea) Vasiliu, age 76, of Westford, MA formerly of Targoviste, Romania passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2020 at her residence surrounded by her loving family. She was the wife of the late Angel Vasiliu, MD.
Born in Medias (province of Transylvania), Romania, on September 7, 1943 she was the daughter of the late Stefan and Valeria (Buta) Ninea. She was raised and educated in Medias and Sibiu through high school.
She was an accomplished volleyball player involved with both a travelling professional team as well as the national team of Romania for two decades. After graduating high school, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Scoala Sanitara, Iasi, Romania.
Her professional sports commitment brought her to Targoviste, Romania, where she accepted a Nurse Manager position in the Surgery Department at the Regional Hospital. This is where she met and fell in love with her future husband, Angel Vasiliu, MD, a young obstetrics/gynecology physician affiliated with the same hospital. They had one son, Calin. She became a widow at the age of only 36 having to raise their only son as a single mother until her son immigrated to the U.S. in 1989. She retired from nursing in 2002, when she decided to join her son in the U.S.
Marina was a devoted mother and grandmother. She cherished her time with her family especially her grandchildren, Isabella, Olivia and Dante by spending countless hours playing with them as young children to later helping with homework and getting them off to school. She was her happiest watching them grow and they brought her great joy.
She is also survived by her loving son Calin Vasiliu and his wife Maureen.
There will be a private gathering to honor and remember Marina on Saturday, February 1, 2020 from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at the Badger Funeral Home, 347 King St., Littleton. Her service will follow at 1:00. Burial will be at St. Catherine's Cemetery, Westford.
