Marion Frances White was born in Concord, Massachusetts on December 13, 1950, to John White and Mary Lawton White. She grew up alongside 11 of her first cousins on Highland Street in West Concord, later moving to Riverside Avenue, with the banks of the Assabet River at her backyard. She attended Concord public elementary school, and then Rose Hawthorne Catholic School from grades 5 through 12. She was active in Girl Scouts, and in high school as a member of the glee club, folk club, and editor of the school newspaper. She graduated at 17 years old, and attended Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, Connecticut for one year, concentrating in psychology. Deciding for a more practical career path, she transferred to the New England Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing, where she received her RN degree in 1972. She joined the New England Deaconess Hospital nursing staff and then moved to Philadelphia, PA where she did medicine-surgery and intensive care nursing at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
