Paul R. Johnson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, friend, and long-time resident of Groton, passed away at home, peacefully surrounded by his family, on January 27, 2025, at the age of 85.
Born on November 21, 1939, Paul lived a life devoted to his family, friends, and passions. For 62 years, he was the loving husband of Rosemarie (Contarino) Johnson, with whom he built a beautiful life filled with love and cherished memories. He was a proud and dedicated father to Mark (wife Karen) and Gina (husband Peter), and a devoted grandfather to Nicholas, Abigail, Samuel, and John—each of whom he adored beyond measure.
Paul attended Purdue University, where he was a proud member of the marching band, playing drums with the same dedication and precision that he brought to every aspect of his life. His love for music, especially jazz, remained with him always.
A true family man, Paul never missed a sporting event, always in the stands cheering on his children and grandchildren, often sporting his signature orange Bauer hat. His love for hockey was unmatched, but he could also be spotted at the occasional dance recital, proving his unwavering support for those he loved. An avid golfer, he enjoyed both playing and watching the game.
Paul had a brilliant mind and a deep passion for problem-solving, which led him to a fulfilling career as a computer software engineer. He loved tackling complex programming challenges, always approaching them with curiosity and determination. His sharp intellect and dedication made him a respected professional in his field.
He treasured time with family, especially those moments before dinner with a drink in hand, laughing and discussing current events or swapping stories about his grandkids. His humor, and wisdom made every gathering special.
A veteran, Paul served as a member of the Flag Allowance, Commander Cruiser Force aboard the USS Canberra. During the flagship’s World Cruise, he played in the Admiral’s band, an experience that brought both adventure and his future family. It was there that he met his brother-in-law, Ronald Contarino, and, after seeing a picture of Rosemarie, asked if he could write to her—the beginning of a beautiful story that spanned more than six decades.
Services for Paul will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Good Sports, an organization that helps underprivileged children participate in sports, or to the American Diabetes Association.
Paul’s legacy of love, kindness, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
