Raymond P. Rice, 73, Littleton, MA
Raymond P. Rice of Littleton, MA died at home on September 23rd with his family by his side, after a years-long battle with cancer. He leaves behind the love of his life and wife of 52 years, Abigail R. (Hartwell) Rice; his brother, Richard Rice; his daughter, Rebecca J. Traxler and her husband Thomas Traxler; his son Randall P. Rice and his husband W. Aron Ringgold; his grandson Jeremy R. Traxler; his sister-in-law, Catherine M. (Miller) Rice, as well as a large extended family and life-long friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and by his brother Ralph M. Rice.
Ray was raised in Westford, MA, the son of Ralph R. Rice and Barbara A. (Murray) Rice. He graduated high school from Carson Long Military Academy in Bloomfield, Pennsylvania. Ray and Abby were married in 1963 at the Congregation Church of Littleton, MA.
He had a long career in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the U.S. Submarine Base in Groton, CT, serving on the USS John Marshall, on which he was a Plank Owner, as well as the USS Pargo. Ray attained the rank of Senior Chief Machinist's Mate, leaving the Submarine Service in 1977. Before, during, and after his time in the Navy, Ray was a self-employed contractor in Uncasville, CT, where he rehabilitated houses and was a partner in a successful paving business before retiring in 1992. After retirement, Ray and his wife Abby moved back to Littleton, MA.
With a reputation as a plain speaking man, Ray possessed an extraordinary intellect for all things mechanical and had a well-known love of animals. He was also a long-time member of the Tahattawan Masonic Lodge in Littleton, MA.
Visiting hours will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 3, 2015 at Badger Funeral Home, 347 King St, Littleton, MA, a Masonic Service at 2 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service at 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Ray's memory be made to the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center, 125 Nashua Street, Suite 540, Boston, MA 02114 or to the Congregational Church of Littleton, 330 King St., Littleton, MA 01460.
