Sally Ann Bowers

December 22, 1929 — December 17, 2022

Littleton, Massachusetts

Sally Ann (Healy) Bowers of Littleton, MA died just shy of her 93rd birthday on December 17, 2022 in Westford, MA. She was born in Littleton on December 22, 1929 to William James and Mary Elizabeth (Hines) Healy.  Her father and grandfather (both Dennis Alfred Haley) were also born in Littleton. Sally graduated valedictorian from Littleton High School in 1947.  She graduated from Fitchburg Teachers College in 1951 and taught fourth grade in Groton, MA.  In 1951 she met John Westley Bowers; the two were married on November 28, 1952, in Littleton, just prior to John’s deployment to Korea. When John returned from Korea, he built, by hand, a beautiful home on Foster Street, where he and Sally raised their family of six children.

Everything Sally did, she did for her children; she was entirely unselfish in her love for them all. Sally took pride in being the first woman to work on the Littleton Board of Appeals, initially as clerk and later as a board member. She was an active member of the Littleton Historical Society board and greatly enjoyed the time spent with her colleagues at the museum. She and John enjoyed traveling extensively in the US and across the world, visiting every continent.

Sally was preceded in death by her husband John, daughters Jane Carol Bowers and Mary Martha Bowers Cochran, sister Mary Healy Brown, and brothers William James Healy and Richard Francis Healy.  She is survived by children; Peter Timothy Bowers of Cary, North Carolina, Elizabeth Ann Shephard of Ayer, Andrew Thomas Bowers of Littleton, and Nancy Jean Bowers (Dick) of Devens.  She is also survived by son-in-law Stephen Cochran of Littleton and grandsons Nigel Cochran (Janine) of Stoneham, John Shephard of Ayer, and Callum Cochran (Jasmyne) of Barrington, NH.

Family and friends will gather to honor and remember Sally on Saturday, April 22, 2023 from 2:00-5:00 pm in  the vestry of the First Unitarian Church, 19 Foster Street, Littleton.  Sally's ashes will be interred privately at Westlawn Cemetery, Littleton.
