Sandra Karen Shammas

Sandra Karen Shammas, 74, of Weare, NH, formerly of Groton, passed away on Sunday, December 15th, 2019 at Boston Medical Center surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Waltham on November 20, 1945, Sandra was the daughter of the late Grant and Clarice (Maria) Atwood. Raised and educated in Weston, Sandra graduated from Weston High School in 1964 where she dominated at basketball and track and field. Following graduation, Sandra made her priority her children and home, always welcoming friends and family with her delicious cooking.

As a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Sandra's greatest joy was her family. In addition to taking care of her family, Sandra kept busy engaging her intellectual curiosity. She loved reading, music, New England sports, archeology, history, space, weather, politics and all things related to science. Additionally, Sandra had a passion for traveling. She explored places including Egypt, Turkey, Lebanon, Italy, England, and Turks & Caicos.

Sandra is survived by her children; William and his wife Catherine Sweeney of Signal Mountain, Tennessee, Michele Sweeney of Pepperell and Ginny Belliveau of Weare, NH and partner Kevin Maiorani of Chelmsford, and Sandra's daughter in-law Heidi Shammas of Savannah, GA; her siblings, Diana Fanning of Acton and Grant Atwood of Maynard; as well as her 10 grandchildren; Arielle, Damien, Morgan, Will, Charlie, Eloise, Conor, Olivia, Elliot and Lucas. She is also survived by 6 great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Sandra was predeceased by her Son Paul Shammas and her grandchildren, Paul, Matthew, and Dorothy.

Friends and family will gather to honor and remember Sandra on Sunday, January 5th from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm at Badger Funeral Home, 45 School Street, Groton. Following the visitation, a memorial service will be held in the funeral home at 12:00 pm.
