Shawn Dierdre Smith of Framingham, MA, passed away suddenly on February 26, 2026, at Framingham Union Hospital due to complications of the flu.
Born in Waterville, Maine to Robert Harry Smith and Betty Lou Adams Smith, Shawn spent the first three years of her life in Unity, Maine, before her family eventually settled in Littleton, MA, where she graduated high school. After high school, Shawn traveled to, and lived in California, New York City and Boston. She loved the energy of the city and the diversity of the people. She was active in the music scene and was a regular participant in the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston. She met her partner of 28 years, Ed Thorburn, in Boston and they moved to Framingham where she spent the rest of her life.
The most important things in Shawn’s life were her relationships- to God, her partner, her family and friends. Her partner says she was a brilliant light in his life. Her friends all speak about her style, uniqueness and loving heart. Shawn enjoyed fantasy and science fiction books, birdwatching and nature, and arranging her crystals. Music, however, was one of her greatest loves. At Christmas, she particularly loved “The Carol of The Bells.” Shawn was moved to tears by Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” and she always enjoyed seeking out new music.
Shawn is survived by her partner, Ed Thorburn of Framingham, MA, her mother Betty Lou Smith of Littleton, MA, her brother Bryn Smith and his wife Tanya of Newton, MA, her sister Nerissa Calo of Vernon, CT, plus other extended family members and treasured friends.
A memorial service will be held later in the Spring.
