Walter Boklaga

October 18, 1923 — April 7, 2012

Walter Boklaga, age 88, a former high school teacher and longtime Pepperell resident, died April 7, 2012 at Nashoba Valley Medical Center in Ayer, MA surrounded by his loving family, after a short illness. He was the husband of the late Jennie H. (Yarmalovicz) Boklaga, with whom he shared 52 years of marriage. He was born in West Bridgewater, MA on October 18, 1923, son of the late Constanty and Stacia (Werda) Boklaga. He graduated from Bridgewater High School Class of 1942, received his B.S. in education from Boston University and continued his education at Bridgewater State University where he received his master's degree.

Mr. Boklaga served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946 attaining the rank of aviation ordinance man, second Class (V6). He received the WWII victory medal, American Theatre medal, and the European-African Middle Eastern medal. He taught social studies and history at Pepperell High School and later at North Middlesex Regional High School for over 40 years and continued as a substitute teacher for several years. He also served as an assistant principal from 1970 to 1980. He was an active member of the football coaching staff for several decades and served as a volunteer for the football, track, and baseball programs for many years following his retirement. He was an avid golfer and gardener when he was not teaching. He and his late wife were active members of Our Lady of Grace Parish (formerly St. Joseph Church) in Pepperell for over 40 years. He was a faithful usher at every Saturday night mass right up until his passing.

He is survived by a son, David S. Boklaga of Pepperell, two daughters, Lauren A. Pena of Pepperell, and Susan J. Boklaga of Palms Beach Garden, FL, a sister in-law, Susan Boklaga of Ayer, four grandchildren, Kristi Boklaga-Justason, and Erin, Kevin, and Christopher Pena all of Pepperell, and a great grandson, Christopher Justason. He was predeceased by his two brothers, William and Anthony.

Visiting hours at the MARCHAND FUNERAL HOME, 16 Pleasant St., Pepperell, MA on Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace Parish worshipping at St. Joseph Church, 28 Tarbell St., Pepperell. Burial with military honors at Woodlawn Cemetery, Pepperell. Memorial donations may be made to North Middlesex Football Alumni, c/o Mark Goodridge, 350 Mass Ave. #207, Arlington, MA 02474.
