William Henry Eger

 William H. Eger, M. D.Groton, MassachusettsWilliam Henry Eger, M. D., 92, died on January 1, 2016 as he wished, at home with family. He was born March 2, 1923 in Schenectady, New York to William R. Eger and Irene Baez Eger. He attended Union College, and graduated from there following a stint in the Army in World War II. He then went on to get his medical degree from Boston University. He met his wife, Marjorie Adele Ploger, during college. He went into the army a second time during the Korean War before getting discharged in 1955. After his discharge he moved to Newton where he raised his family.During his career as a psychiatrist, he consulted, taught, and practiced at numerous Boston area hospitals and clinics including the Bedford, West Roxbury, and Framingham V.A. Hospitals, Mass. General, Medfield State Hospital, James Jackson Putman Children’s Center, and the Douglas Thom Clinic for Children while maintaining a private practice in Boston and then Newton. He was an assistant in Psychiatry at Harvard University Medical School, Director of Boston City Hospital Guidance Center, Assistant Professor of Child Psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine, and a lecturer at Harvard Graduate Training Program in Child Psychiatry, and Boston University School of Social Work. He was elected a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.After moving to Groton he was active on the Groton Board of Appeals and the Great Ponds Advisory Committee.He greatly enjoyed summers on the Cape and in Groton with his family. He was predeceased by his wife, Jo, who died in 2010, and grandson Joseph Eger who died in 2007. He is survived by sons, William Eger and his companion Theresa Olivas Eagle, Robert Eger and wife Karen, and Richard Eger; and grandchildren, Rosemary Eger Peckham and James Eger.Donations in his name may be made to the Nashua River Watershed Assoc. at 592 Main Street, Groton, MA 01450.
